In late June I saw a call for artists on Instagram from a local gallery asking, "so... what now...?" Co-curated by two artists that signed off as C|J, the intent of the show was to see all the different ways this phrase can be interpreted, coped with, and digested.
I sought to answer this inquiry with a fresh new painting. My piece is titled Auto-Nyotaimori, a portrait that reflects my own maladaptive habits and need for instant gratification. Nyotaimori refers to the Japanese practice of serving sushi from the naked body of a woman. Food is one of my greatest pleasures, whether that is to celebrate with or consume while stressing. Sushi happens to be one of my favorite foods, and something I constantly go back to even if it’s not financially smart. I’d be willing to use myself as my own platter if that’s what will get me through while doom-scolling on my phone. Consumption or gluttony is my compulsion, including food, social media, music, tv shows, etc. Sometimes it’s for inspiration—it’s what informs my artistic practice, and other times it’s to forget. So what now, whether I face uncertainty or find assurance? I consume.

When my work was accepted, I was thrilled to see my name alongside a fantastic set of amazing artists. We had all interpreted the theme so differently, which allowed a wide variety of local works rather simply white cubing similar projects. Our opening reception was on July 10th with a bustling crowd. It was great to see everyone’s reaction to our collective work. Following the opening were 3 separate artist talks where our creators were given the spotlight to talk about their process and art, then a closing reception to get one final look all together on July 31st. Thank you to the curators, my fellow artists, and close supporters for having me!
